Doing Kali Gandaki Valley Trek ?

Kali Valley Gandaki Trek is pretty popular trekking in Annapurna Region. The valley sits between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. This trek is famous for providing amazing Himalayan views, world’s deepest George, breathtaking landscape and diversified culture. Similarly, our trail follows through beautiful forest of rhododendrons, oaks and pines, you can see stunning views of Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m). Nilgiri (7041m), Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna II (7739m).

We initiate our beautiful trip from Kathmandu. After exploring Kathmandu, we drive to Pokhara from where; we take another drive to Nayapul & start our first trek. We take regular Poon hill route to reach Ghorepani and witness amazing sunrise/sunset view from Poon Hill view point. Moreover, from Ghorepani, we trek to Sikha and we will be passing amazing rhododendron and magnolia forest. The next day, we trek to Tatopani to take natural hot spring bathe. Similarly, the trail posses some rivers and we have to cross those rivers to reach there. The very next day, we reach Ghasa and along the way, we can see beautiful waterfall as we climb ridge and descend down to the village of Ghasa. We walk alongside Kali Gandaki River and make sure to reach Kalapani to trek to Marpha. We have two routes to Marpha, we choose in alignment to the season we are travelling. Finally, usually take short route, where we have to cross wood bridges. Now comes the pilgrimage trail, we trek Muktinath from Jomsom and again trek back to Jomsom. From Jomsom, we take flight to Pokhara and catch earliest flight to Kathmandu.

Day 1
Arrive Kathmandu (1350m)

Our airport representative picks you up from airport and transfers you to hotel for further briefing about the upcoming trip. In the evening, a small meeting shall be held to discuss and prepare for the trek. And after meeting you can roam around Thamel to get familiar with environment and location.

Day 2
Kathmandu Sightseeing & Preparation

During this day you can do excursion or sightseeing around Kathmandu valley and preparation for Dhampus peak climbing. Sightseeing includes tour around Swayambhunath (monkey temple), Bauddhanath (Buddhastupa), Pashupatinath/Biggest Hindu Temple & Patan Durbar Square.

Day 3
Drive to Pokhara (830m) – about 6 hrs

After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel to start your journey to Pokhara. Located about 200 km west from Kathmandu, the drive mostly follows along the Trishuli riverside. Enjoy the views from your window of the changing landscapes. In the evening you can do sightseeing around Pokhara.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in hotel.

Day 4
Drive to Nayapul and trek to Tikhedhunga (1450m)

From Pokhara we drive to Nayapul and you will start your trek to Tikedhunga. At a 30minutes walk from Nayapul you will reach to Birethati. After a short stops, and trail slightly goes hot sparing, follow the Modi Khola, village of syaulibazar, Kueme new bridge and finally crossing several rice field beautifully settled hamlets and reach to hot sparing, Jhinu Danda.

Day 5
Trek to Ghorepani (2874m) - about 6 hrs

The trail goes steep up for 1.5 hours through stone steps where the trail leads through cultivated fields. The rest of the trail weaves through enchanting rhododendron and oak forest (blooms in March, April). Arriving at the top of the Ghorepani pass, you will be taken to your accommodation and have a chance to rest your feet.

Day 6
Trek to Sikha (2200m) - about 4 hrs

We take a small hike to Poon Hill view point (3210m) and experience glorious sunrise view if the sky is clear. The panoramic view with amazing sunrise over Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Annapurna, Dhaulagiri range and the other is absolutely worth watching. We trek back to Ghorepani and descend along the path of rhododendron and magnolia forest to Chitre and reach the village of Sikha.

Day 7
Trek to Tatopani (1190m) – about 5 hrs

We take a gentle walk through Ghar Khola and cross the river. We trek upstream with Kali Gandaki River and reach Tatopani. Here, you can enjoy pure natural hot water bathe and do not make use of soap because use of chemicals in the water is prohibited.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 8
Trek to Ghasa (2010m) – about 6 hrs

We trek along the gorge of Kali Gandaki River and take continuous ups to reach Rupsi Charra (waterfall). We leave the waterfall behind and take spectacular path which is carved out of the cliff. We climb up to the ridge and descend down to the beautiful village of Thakalis settling at village of Gaza.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 9
Trek to Kalapani (2530m) – about 4 hrs

Ahead of us lies a good 2 hours of walk to reach the western bank of Kali-Gandaki River and cross Lete Kola. We pass the village of Lete and take a short climb to another village of Kalapani. Kalipani offers magnificent views of Dhaulagiri range and its icefall with Nilgiri at the right and Annapurna I at its side.

Day 10
Trek to Marpha (2670m) via Tukuche (2590m) – about 6 hrs

We trek back to the Kali Gandaki River valley. The trek has two paths, one for winter and other is a long trail for rainy season. We usually take short route to Larjung using several log bridges to cross rivers. We then trek to the Tukuche village; we take two hours of great walk to the charming village of Marpha.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 11
Trek to Jomsom (2710m) – about 3 hrs

Again, we have two routes to choose from and it depends upon, which season of the year you are travelling. One is through river bed and it is 20 minute shorter than main route and we trek along river upstream till Jomsom – It is the administrative headquarter of whole Mustang and houses its own airstrip and better facilities.

Day 12
Trek to Muktinath (3760m) – about 6 hrs

Muktinath is a important pilgrimage site for both the Hindus and Buddhists. And today, we head to Muktinath. The trek is amazing with nice views of Mt. Dhaulagiri. In Muktinath, you can explore the surrounding of the Muktinath temple. The water spouts in the temple one attractive part and there is a Buddhist Monastery too.

Day 13
Trek to Jomsom – about 5 hrs

Today we trek back to Jomsom through the same route of Kagbeni after visiting some monasteries and Hindu temples in Muktinath. Reaching Ekle Bhatti, we continue our trek to Jomsom. Down the way, we get to see magnificent views of mountains and fields.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 14
Fly to Pokhara & to Kathmandu

We take flight to Pokhara from Jomsom. You can see mountain views while on the way. Then you can spend you days in Pokhara by doing sightseeing. It depends on the schedule of you flight. The flight is relatively short and well offering in case of scenery. For the return trip two options are available, you can either take easy 25 minute flight to Kathmandu or take longer 7 hours of scenic drive to Kathmandu, the choice is yours. Both the means are great with beautiful mountain views during flight and fascinating views of landscapes in drive.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and finally an overnight stay in hotel. Attend the evening dinner and cultural program provided by the company.

Day 15

After the successful completion of our trip, our representative drops you to the airport for your journey home. You are dropped off 3 hours earlier so that there is no any delay in flight. Or you can join another adventure and explore hidden gems of Nepal. Till then, have a safe journey to Home!

Useful information

Trekking Group Size

We organize trekking in Kanchenjunga region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members ) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.

Experience and Health Requirements

Kanchenjunga trekking is considered a moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 5 – 7 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching Kanchenjunga No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide travelling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the travelling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.


Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability ) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of same sex.


Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during Kanchenjunga trekking. They can enjoy wide variety of food from typical Nepali food, Tibetan food to all types of international cuisine (Continental, Italian, and Indian.). Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise AdventureTrek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel / lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges / hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.


Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physically fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly specially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he / she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

A variety of clothing is necessary for the Kanchenjunga trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers need give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

Porter Care

We are strongly committed to the porters rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, foot ware and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of sever condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident


Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Kanchenjunga region are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (mid Sept. – mid Dec. ). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.
