Tilicho Lake and Mesokanta la Pass Trekking is one of the best and hardest treks in Annapurna region. Tilicho Lake 4919 m (16138 ft)  is very popular and situated in 4949m making it the highest lake of the world. Mesokanta la Pass 5230m, (17159 ft) is unique with extraordinary scenes and rough trekking trail in Annapurna route we can enjoy with crystal clear views of the Himalayas.

Tilicho lake is getting popularity among the trekkers due to the higher latitude lake of the world. This trek start from Kathmandu all the way drive to Besishar passing through the Trishuli and Marshyangadi river enjoy with great panoramic views of the Himalayas and countryside. You will stay in trekking lodge or in the camping tent. This is hard trekking trail so some places use of rope is necessary in order to pass the journey. Along the way, we can see high mountain sceneries, snow-covered landscapes, beautiful remote villages and peoples with different culture and religion. Tilicho lake and Meskokanta La pass is a challenging and technical trek.

Tilicho Mesokanta Pass trek is hard and interesting for the adventure lovers. This trek following the high lands of Annapurna Region offering beautiful mountain scenery, natural landscapes, different Floras and faunas, different villages and religious monuments are delightful for the traveler. Also, you will be visiting Manang and Jomsom which are very popular among Nepali Travelers. Manang (3519m) & Jomsom (2800m) are both Tibetan influenced village with views of giant mountains and some lakes in Manang.

Day 1
Arrival in Airport

You will be welcomed in Nepal and our SAT representative will be there to pick you up and drop you off in designated location for overnight stay. You can take rest or read articles on trekking.

Day 2
Sightseeing & Trek Preparation

Kathmandu sightseeing trip will begin in the morning. You can either do it alone or join group we can arrange you car or bus. And in the evening trek preparation and small meeting is held to further literate you about the trekking routes, porters, guides, rules and necessary equipments.

Day 3
Kathmandu to Besi Sahar 6-7 hrs

Our journey will be around 6 hours of drive to Besisahar. And along the way you will be seeing giant White Mountains, rivers, green sceneries and stunning landscapes. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in hotel.

Day 4
Besi Sahar to Bahundanda (1300m) 5-6 hrs

Afterwards we will be trekking around an hour to reach Khudi. Khudi offers the first glimpses of Manaslu Range and then trek to Bahundada. And along the way we have to pass the typical local houses and diverse cultural and ethnic tribes while exchanging greetings (Namaste). Our route passes through subtropical forest and rice terraces of Sera. Then comes the 60m waterfall after passing Bhulbule and slowly we will be arriving to Ngadi Khola (river), which we will be crossing by suspension bridge. And finally route takes us gently upward to Bahundanda, an attractive village in the saddle of a long ridge at 1300m. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 5
Baundanda to Chamje (1410m) 5-6 hrs

After breakfast, we trek through steep trails reaching village of Syange. And after crossing several suspension bridges comes Chanje en-route Jagat. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 6
Chamje to Bagarchhap (2160m) 5 hrs

Through the steep uphill course of Marshyangdi River, we reach to the first village of Manang, Tal (1675m). And then the wide and flat valley with ups and downs leads us to Dharapani (1890m) from where further trail leads us to the Bagarchhap welcomed by the stoned entrance. Bagarchap is a typical Tibet influenced village with apples and maize fields. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 7
Bagarchhap to Chame (2630m) 5 hrs

Climbing to Tyanja (2360m) and through the forest and river leading to Kopar and a little bit closer to reaching Chame, headquarter of Manang District. From here we can see great views of Annapurna II and come across two small hot springs. And you are sure to encounter a local community who are believed to be migrated from Tibet in the past. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 8
Chame to Pisang (3300m) 5 hrs

After the stay in Chame we pace forward crossing some narrow paths and dense forest. Right after the hours of walk, the steep and big rock (1500m.) can be seen. Crossing this rock can be an adventure before we reach to the accommodating area in lower pisang. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 9
Pisang to Manang (3540m) 5 hrs

The Moments passing through Geru is excellent that offers us stunning landscapes and magnificent view of Mt. Annapurna and Pisang. Today we will be going to Barge monastery, also the biggest monastery of whole Manang. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 10
Acclimatization day at Manang village (3540m)

To stay fit for further journey and atmospheric adaptation we take a day off here in Manang for acclimatization. For the whole day we will be doing some walk around the village viewing beautiful mountain sceneries. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 11
Manang to Khangsar Village (3700m)

After acclimatization at Manang village our journey to Khangsar village begins through the western gates and river. Khangsar village is still in Tibetan style and knows as the Tibetan village of Nepal. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 12
Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp (4200m) 5 hrs

Passing through the monastery we begin to conquer our destination. Through the high ridge,slopes and narrow valleys we ascend toward the line of ridge. New path leads us to high crest and descending thru screed slopes comes the main valley where its bottom is a brook. On the other side is Tilicho Base Camp (4200m). Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 13
Trek to Tilicho Lake (5200m) & Tent(4200m) 6 hrs

It is better to start off early in the morning in order to avoid wind. It takes around 4 hours to reach Tilicho Lake, the highest lake of the world. Tilicho Lake is cold barren place and upon arrival you can witness the spectacular beauty of nature. And we will be camping there. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 14
Trek to Nam Phu (3,510m) via Mesokanta La (5,099m)

Today’s trekking will pass through very dry place known as Mesokanta and finally reach a place known as Nam Phu. Not to worry, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs are still with us and it is better to cross the pass early because in the daytime wind gets strong Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 15
Trek to Jomsom (2720m)

From Mesokanta, we will be heading Jomsom. Jomsom is also known as Dzongsam or New Fort and offers great view of Mountains like Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The panoramic view can be dramatic with green hills and slopes. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in trekking lodge.

Day 16
Fly to Pokhara from Jomsom

From Jomsom we take flight to Pokhara. Time here in Pokhara can be spent relaxing or going up for adventure. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner and finally an overnight stay in hotel.

Day 17
Pokhara to Kathmandu (Fly or Drive)

For the return trip two options are available, you can either take easy 25 minute flight to Kathmandu or take longer 7 hours of scenic drive to Kathmandu, the choice is yours. Both the means are great with beautiful mountain views during flight and fascinating views of landscapes in drive. Meals included: dinner by our side and finally an overnight stay in hotel.

Day 18
Trip concludes in Kathmandu

Last day, you can either safely make return journey to home or you can join for another exciting adventure. And according to flight schedule you will be escorted to airport approximately 3 hours earlier to catch flight to your next destination.

Useful information

Trekking Group Size

We organize trekking in Annapurna region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.

Experience and Health Requirements

Tilicho Mesokanta Pass trekking ranges from easy to moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 6 – 8 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching there. No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide travelling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the travelling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.

Accommodations

Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of same sex.

Meals

Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during Tilicho Mesokanta Pass. They can enjoy wide variety of food from typical Nepali food, Sherpa food, and Tibetan food to all types of international cuisine (Continental, Italian, and Indian). Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise Adventure Trek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel / lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges / hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.

Acclimatization

Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physically fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly specially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he / she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

Equipment and Packing List

A variety of clothing is necessary for the Tilicho Mesokanta Pass Trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers need give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

All trekking staff of Sunrise Adventure Trek are locally employed and have the adequate knowledge about culture, ecosystem, flora, fauna, geography, history and the safety measures in running the trips. Their attitude and the efforts will be always concentrated on the less impact of the trekkers to the local culture, custom, nature and the eco system.

Porter Care

We are strongly committed to the porters rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, foot ware and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of sever condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident.

Season

Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Annapurna region are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (mid Sept. – mid Dec. ). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.

  • 1How difficult is trek to Tilicho Mesokanta and how can we prepare?

    Trekking to Tilicho Mesokanta is an easy trek as compared to others. And our company also provides well skilled guides and potters to help you during the trek. People with weak ankles, lungs, hearts problems may suffer more difficulty on trekking. Well preparation is needed for every trek.

  • 2. What about safety measurements and altitude sickness do the guides and porters have their insurance in Tilicho Mesokanta trek?

    Worrying for safety measurements?  Our guides having long experience are much professional for handling such issues with various means of safety measurements. For common health issues like: headache, common cold, diarrhea, vomiting, we provide you first aid medicines. In case of being sick in the mountain, Sunrise Adventure Trek will make proper arrangements rescue by helicopter, for this you should have better travel insurance. If our guide and porters may suffer from sickness, they have also travel and medical insurance and we will also rescue by helicopter.

  • 3. What about guide & porter, do they have well training?

    Guides and potters provided to our guests had complete accomplishment of several trainings required for their professions by the Ministry of Nepal Tourism. Having well experience in tourism sector as a guide or potter, make easy to explain all the information required for trekking and can create very familiar environment to the guests.

  • 4. What about communication system during trek?

    As all the porters and guides are well certified by the Ministry of Nepal tourism they can easily understand and speak English languages during the trek. On the other hand, we can also provide you guides and potters according to your own understanding languages.

  • 5. Do I need to give tips to guide and potter and if how much?

    It’s difficult to mention about tipping which is up to your happiness, but guides and potters do expect the tips at the end of the trip. However, normally people can give minimum 10% of their total payment to the guide and porter.

  • 6. What kind of food, drinking water and accommodation do we have on Tilicho Mesokanta trek?

    Trek to Tilicho Mesokanta with Sunrise Adventure Trek includes trekking lodges or guest houses as accommodation with twin bed sharing room, if you are in a group and if you are solo traveler, you have private room.  Regarding meals, we will have some options to choose like: continental foods, Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisine etc. For drinking water, you can buy the mineral bottles or safe drinking water from hotel either you can bring water tablets.

  • 7. How many hours should I walk per day and what happened if I am a slow walker in the group?

    Normally, we have to walk around 5 to 7 hours per day, if you are slow in walk the team leader will professionally manage to you walking with our assistance guide and potter.
