The Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal, Rara Lake is situated in the Mugu district, near the western region of the country. Rara Lake Trek is wonderful and unique opportunity treaded on the remote trails of western Nepal. Rara lake is also known as Nepal’s biggest and deepest lake. “Rara” water surface which is 10.8 sq. km2 ( 4.2 Sq mi ) at altitude of around 2,990 meters / 9810ft above sea level. Maximum depth of 167 m/ 548 fit is 5.1 km (3.2 miles). The 10-day trek begins with visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu followed by a flight to Nepalgunj and then to Jumla.
 
Rara lake is surrounded by Rara national park which was established in 1976. Rara national park was consists of 1074 spices of flora, fauna 9includes 51 spices of mammals and 214 species of birds. Beautiful freshwater lake and wonderful natures admire the glory of Rara national park and people are enchanting to visit the place. The fertile land and availability of different types of herbs is the next chance to promote agriculture product and medical planets in this place.
 
 
It is the highest lake in Nepal and proudly addressed by the Nepalese as the ‘Queen of Lakes’. During your trek, you will also be entering the Rara National Park which is considered to be one of the finest parks in the world and is an ideal habitat for musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, Himalayan goral, and other exotic animals. During your journey, you will not only be in the presence of snowcapped mountains, forests, and enchanting lakes but will also get to witness the rustic life of the local’s people. Walk through desolate, stunning landscapes of the Trans Himalayan mountains. Finally, you can encounter authentic Tibetan Buddhism and Bonpo culture during the trek. After spending the night in a hotel the following day starts off with a final air trip to Jumla.On the way lies an ancient village named Micha. The village has many Buddhist Stupas. These Stupas were built in the late 15th century in memory of the Buddhist saints who lived in the region. After around six days trek visit a 300-year-old Hindu temple known as Kanaksundari.
 
Day 1
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

After your arrival in the airport you will be greeted by a representative of Sunrise Adventure and drop to hotel. In evening we will provide you short briefing about your trip at Sunrise Adventure Treks.

Day 2
Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing: World Heritage Sites

After breakfast sightseeing tour by visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites visit Patan Durbar Square enjoy Nepalese art and architecture. The architecture is typical of the Malla dynasty who ruled over Nepal from the 12th to the 18th century. Swayambhunath Temple is popular among foreigners as the Monkey Temple owing to the large monkey population residing in the area. Pashupatinath Temple is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River and is one of the principal temples of Lord Shiva. The Bauddhanath Stupa is one of the largest stupas in South Asia which is built on the ancient trade route to Tibet. You get a chance to collect the beautiful memories in Nepalese histories.

Day 3
Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (150m/490 ft): 1 hour

After completing the excursion in Kathmandu, we take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj for about 1 hour, located in Western Nepal. Nepalgunj, is also known as the gateway to Simikot, Humla which is situated near the border of Nepal and India. Nepalgung is a very interesting town place that showcases the diverse culture of Nepal. In Nepalgunj, we visit the local market, mini-zoo and nearby villages. On the way, we can see the people living there from different customs and culture. Overnight in Nepalgunj.

Day 4
Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jumla (2,540m/8,334ft): 20 minutes

Now, it’s time to go up of the geographical regions, after breakfast we leave the Terai plains of Nepalgunj and fly to the hilly region where we get to observe the landscape of Jumla. Jumla is one of the least accessible districts in Nepal which is also the administrative headquarters of Karnali Zone. Situated in the foothills of the Sisne Himal, Jumla is also the gateway for trekkers who want to explore the remote Karnali region of Nepal. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 5
Day 05: Trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur (3055m/10,023ft)

Jumla is the starting point of our trek. After breakfast, today we leave Jumla and ascend to Chere Chaur via Jugad Khola. Chere Chaur is a very charming place, offers us beautiful scenic environment of Jumla town, Tila valley and Chyakhure Lekh. On the way, we go up through the stages and pass Khalanga Bazaar, a small marketplace for the nearby villages. We also pass a couple of villages and a temple before reaching our destination. Day 6
Day 06: Chere Chaur to Chalachaur (2980m/9,777ft)

This is the second day of our trek, first having the early breakfast; we take the western trail and ascend slowly until the Jaljala pass (3580m) above the sea level. We cross the pass and continue trekking on a relatively straight trail until reaching Jaljala Chaur. From here we ascend up on a steep trail and enter the Rara Lake Circuit before reaching Chalachaur. Overnight in Chalachaur.

Day 7
Day 07: Chalachaur to Sinja Valley (2490m/ft)

Uphill trek to Sinja Valley. On the way we pass through several villages and walk along the Jaljala Khola (stream). Sinja Valley holds an important place in the history of Nepal. The valley houses the ancient capital city of the Khasa Kingdom that ruled this area from the 12th to the 14th century. Palaces, temples, and the ancient remains of a settlement were uncovered during excavations spearheaded by the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge University. Overnight in Sinja Valley.

Day 8
Day 08: Sinja to Ghorosingha (3050m/10007ft)

We leave Sinja on an uphill trail alongside Hima River and cross by the Laha village. From the village we climb on a steep trail for a while followed by a relatively easy trail, pass by the beautiful forests and valleys. From Laha, it is a steep climb up until Ghorosingha alongside Ghatte Khola (stream).so, we have to pass through the suspension bridge. Overnight in Ghorosingha.

Day 9
Day 09: Ghorosingha to Rara Lake (3010m/9876ft)

Our steep ascent of today begins with the breakfast. The trail we walk through is alongside Chuchhemara Danda from where we get a chance to observe the spectacular views of Himalayas, along with the vast and tranquil Rara Lake. The lush green vegetation, flora and faunas of the Rara National Park provide you unexpected beautiful moments of your life. On the way to Rara Lake, we pass through Khatyar Khola Camp, Khatyar stream and few villages including Murma. From Murma, trail gets a little bit easier. Then, we continue walking towards Chapri village quarter head of Rara National Park. Overnight at Rara Lake.

Day 10
Day 10: Explore Rara Lake

Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal located at an altitude of 2290 m. After breakfast we explore the area, on the southeast corner of the Lake, there is Thakur Baba’s temple. So, you get a chance to observe the temple. While boating we get to admire the picturesque setting of the lake and discover quite a few varieties of fish. Here, we can find the amazing views of mountains as Chuchemara Peak lies on the southern side of the Rara Lake whereas Ruma Kand and Malika Kand peaks frame its northern area. Overnight at Rara Lake.

Day 11
Day 11: Rara Lake to Pina (2440m/ 8006ft)

Today, our trail is easy and we walk on a relatively straight path until Gamgadhi, headquarters of the remote Mugu District of Nepal. From Gamgadhi, the trail descends down steeply to Pina Village. Overnight stay at Pima.

Day 12
Day 12: Pina to Burma (2850m/9351ft)

From Pina we descend and cross the Ghurchi Lagna pass at 3480 m during which we get to observe the panoramic views of mountains. We continue our descent and pass through a few villages before reaching Bumra. The Bumra village is also known as Nauri Ghat. Overnight at Burma.

Day 13
Day 13: Trek ends: Burma to Jumla (2540m/8334ft)

We take an early breakfast and then cross two suspension bridges above Hima River. After crossing the village we walk downhill. Walking for a few hours takes us to a hot spring where we can ease our aching body with a dip or a natural hot bath. Not long after the hot spring, we cross Danphe Lagna pass at 3691 m. After reaching at Cherechaur, we follow the same trail back to reach Jumla. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 14
Day 14: Fly to Nepalgunj, fly to Kathmandu

After reaching Nepalgunj, we fly back to Kathmandu. And after reaching at Kathmandu we take a rest or do some shopping. At evening the company, Sunrise Adventure Treks will offer you evening meal and cultural program.

Day 15: Final departure

Our representative will drop you to airport before 3 hours of your departing time. Have a safe flight back home or you can join another trip in or outside Nepal with Sunrise Adventure Treks.

Trekking Group Size

We organize trekking in Rara Lake region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members ) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.

Experience and Health Requirements

Rara Lake trekking is considered a moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 5 – 7 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however, our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching Rara Lake. No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide traveling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the traveling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.

Accommodations

Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability ) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of the same sex.

Meals

Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) during Rara Lake trekking. They can enjoy the wide variety of food from typical Nepali food, Tibetan food to all types of international cuisine (Continental, Italian, and Indian.). Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise AdventureTrek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel/lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, a set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges/hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.

Acclimatization

Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physical fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly especially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he/she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

Equipment and Packing List

A variety of clothing is necessary for the Rara Lake trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers to need to give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason, you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

Porter Care

We are strongly committed to the porters' rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, footwear, and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If the needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of the severing condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident.

Best Season

Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Rara Lake region are Spring (March-May) and Autumn (mid-Sept. – mid-Dec.). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against the blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.

  • 1. How difficult is Rara Lake trek and how can I Prepare?

    Trek to Rara Lake is remote and easy type trekking, can be attainable by many people nowadays. Our company provides you a porter and a guide with policy or travel insurance. People with very weak ankles, knee, hearts and lungs may have to suffer much difficulty in trekking.

  • 2. What about the safety measurements and altitude sickness do the guides and porters have their insurance in Rara Lake trek?

    Worrying for safety measurements?  Our guides having long experience are much professional for handling such issues with various means of safety measurements. For common health issues like: headache, common cold, diarrhea, vomiting, we provide you first aid medicines. In case of being sick in the mountain, Sunrise Adventure Trek will make proper arrangements rescue by helicopter, for this you should have better travel insurance. If our guide and porters may suffer from sickness, they have also travel and medical insurance and we will also rescue by helicopter.

  • 3. What about the weather conditions and Jumla flight?

    After reaching at Nepalgunj, we have to take a flight to Jumla in the morning then we start trek from Jumla but sometimes due to the air traffic and weather problems, the flight may be delayed or canceled. Due to uncertainty of Jumla weather, we are not sure about untimed flight. If there will be frequent weather problem, we do arrange a flight by helicopter chopper and for this you have to pay additionally.

  • 4. What about guide & porter, do they have well training?

    Guides and potters provided to our guests had complete accomplishment of several trainings required for their professions by the Ministry of Nepal Tourism. Having well experience in tourism sector as a guide or potter, make easy to explain all the information required for trekking and can create very familiar environment to the guests.

  • 5. What about communication system during trek?

    As all the porters and guides are well certified by the Ministry of Nepal tourism they can easily understand and speak English language during the trek. On the other hand, we can also provide you guides and potters according to your own understanding language.

  • 6. Do I need to give tips to guide and potter and if how much?

    It’s difficult to mention about tipping, but guides and potters do expect the tips at the end of the trip. However, normally people can give minimum 10% of their total payment to the guide and porter.

  • 7. What is the limitation of weight to Jumla flight and where do I store my extra bags?

    You can carry 10 kg luggage plus 5 kg hand bag and if you want to carry more than the limit you have to pay extra charges. You can keep your extra bags in your hotel or in the office in Kathmandu.

  • 8. What kind of food, drinking water and accommodation do we have on Rara Lake trek?

    Trek to Rara Lake with Sunrise Adventure Trek includes trekking lodges or guest houses as accommodation with twin bed sharing room, if you are in a group and if you are solo traveler, you have private room.  Regarding meals, we will have some options to choose like: continental foods, Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisine etc. For drinking water, you can buy the mineral bottles or safe drinking water from hotel either you can bring water tablets.

  • 9. How many hours should I walk per day and what happened if I am a slow walker in the group?

    Normally, we have to walk around 5 to 7 hours per day, if you are slow in walk the team leader will professionally manage to you walking with our assistance guide and potter.
