The Rara Lake is largest lake in Nepal, Rara Lake is situated in the Mugu district, near the western region of the country.

Rara Lake Trek is wonderful and unique opportunity treaded on the remote trails of western Nepal . Nepal’s largest Lake “Rara” which is 10.8 sq. kms at  altitude 2,990 meters. The 10-day trek begins with visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu followed by a flight to Nepalgunj and then to Jumla. From. It is the highest lake in Nepal and proudly addressed by the Nepalese as the ‘Queen of Lakes’. During your trek, you will also be entering the Rara National Park which is considered to be one of the finest parks in the world and is an ideal habitat for musk deer, Himalayan black bear, leopard, Himalayan goral, and other exotic animals. During your ourney you will not only be in the presence of snowcapped mountains, forests and enchanting lakes but will also get to witness the rustic life of the locals people. Walk through desolate, stunning landscapes of the Trans Himalayan mountains. Encounter authentic Tibetan Buddhism and Bonpo culture. After spending the night in a hotel the following day starts off with a final air trip to Jumla.On the way lies an ancient village named Micha. The village has many Buddhist Stupas. These Stupas were built in the late 15th century in memory of the Buddhist saints who lived in the region. After around six days trek visit a 300 year old Hindu temple known as Kanaksundari.

Day 1
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

After your arrival in the airport we will be greeted by a representative of Sunrise Adventure and drop to hotel and shortly briefing about trekking plan.

Day 2
Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing: World Heritage Sites

After breakfast sightseeing tour by visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites visit Patan Durbar Squre enjoy Nepalese art and architecture. The architecture is typical of the Malla dynasty who ruled over Nepal from the 12th to the 18th century. Swayambhunath Temple is popular among foreigners as the Monkey Temple owing to the large monkey population residing in the area. Pashupatinath Temple is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River and is one of the principal temples of Lord Shiva. The Bauddhanath Stupa is one of the largest stupas in South Asia which is built on the ancient trade route to Tibet.

Day 3
Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (150m/490 ft): 1 hour

After short excursion in Kathmandu, we take around hour-long flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, located in Western Nepal. Nepalgunj, a town near the Nepal-India border, is also the gateway to Simikot, Humla. The town itself is an interesting Terai town that showcases the diverse culture of Nepal. In Nepalgunj, we visit the local market, mini-zoo and nearby villages. Overnight in Nepalgunj.

Day 4
Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Jumla (2,540m/8,334ft): 20 minutes

After breakfast we leave the Terai plains of Nepalgunj and fly to the hilly landscape of Jumla, one of the least accessible districts in Nepal. Situated in the foothills of the Sisne Himalya, Jumla is also the gateway for trekkers who want to explore the remote Karnali region of Nepal. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 5
Day 05: Trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur (3055m/10,023ft)

Leave Jumla and ascend to Chere Chaur along the Jugad Khola. On the way, we pass Khalanga Bazzar, a small market place for the nearby villages. We also pass a couple of villages and a temple before reaching our destination. Overnight in Chere Chaur.

Day 6
Day 06: Chere Chaur to Chalachaur (2980m/9,777ft)

We take the western trail and ascend slowly until the Jaljala pass (3580m). We cross the pass and continue trekking on a relatively straight trail until reaching Jaljala Chaur. From here we ascend on a steep trail and enter the Rara Lake Circuit before reaching Chalachaur. Overnight in Chalachaur.

Day 7
Day 07: Chalachaur to Sinja Valley (2490m/ft)

Uphill trek to Sinja Valley. On the way we pass through several villages and walk along the Jaljala Khola (stream). Sinja Valley holds an important place in the history of Nepal. The valley houses the ancient capital city of the Khasa Kingdom that ruled this area from the 12th to the 14th century. Palaces, temples, and the ancient remains of a settlement were uncovered during excavations spearheaded by the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge University. Overnight in Sinja Valley.

Day 8
Day 08: Sinja to Ghorosingha (3050m/10007ft)

We leave Sinja on an uphill trail alongside Hima River. From the village we climb on a steep trail for a while followed by a relatively easy trail until Laha Village. From Laha, it is a steep climb up until Ghorosingha alongside Ghatte khola (stream). Overnight in Ghorosingha.

Day 9
Day 09: Ghorosingha to Rara Lake (3010m/9876ft)

We begin our steep ascent after breakfast. Our trail is alongside Chuchhemara Danda from where we get to admire the Himalayan panorama, the vast and tranquil Rara Lake, and the lush vegetation of the Rara National Park. On the way to Rara Lake, we pass through Khatyar Khola Camp and a few villages including Murma. From Murma, the ascent gets a little easier. We continue walking towards Chapri village which houses the Rara National Park Head Quarter. Overnight at Rara Lake.

Day 10
Day 10: Explore Rara Lake

Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal. After breakfast we investigate the azure waters of the massive lake also referred to as Mahendra Taal (Lake) after late king Mahendra. While boating we get to admire the picturesque setting of the lake and discover quite a few varieties of fish. Chuchemara Peak lies on the southern side of the Rara Lake whereas Ruma Kand and Malika Kand peaks frame its northern area. Overnight at Rara Lake.

Day 11
Day 11: Rara Lake to Pina (2440m/ 8006ft)

From Rara Lake our trail is easy and we walk on a relatively straight path until Gamgadhi which is the headquarters of the remote Mugu District of Nepal. From Gamgadhi, we descend on a steep trail to Pina Village where we spend the night.

Day 12
Day 12: Pina to Bumra (2850m/9351ft)

From Pina we descend and cross the Ghurchi Lagna pass at 3480 m. We continue our descent and pass through a few villages before reaching Bumra. The Bumra village is also known as Nauri Ghat.

Day 13
Day 13: Trek ends: Bumra to Jumla (2540m/8334ft)

Cross two suspension bridges above Hima River and walk downhill. After walking for a few hours, we get to a hot spring where we can ease our aching body with a dip. Not long after the hot spring, we cross Danphe Lagna pass at 3691 m. After reaching Cherechaur, we follow the same trail we took couple of days back and reach Jumla. Overnight in Jumla.

Day 14
Day 14: Fly to Nepalgunj, fly to Kathmandu

After reaching Nepalgunj, we fly back to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. After reaching Kathmandu, we freshen up and take a rest. In the evening there will be a farewell dinner hosted by Sunrise Adventure team and overnight stay hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 15
Day 15: Final departure

Our representative will drop to airport. Have a safe flight back home or YOu can jon another trip.

Rara Lake trekking is beneficial in term of Health gain. You are likely to lose some fats and get better breathing capacity and get greater heart endurance. Rara Lake is worthy for awesome adventure also. You can thrive with culture, ecosystem, flora, fauna, geographyand ungorgetable history crafted with the place. Enchanting Lakes, Sno-Capped Mountains, Rivers including Largest Lake of Nepal are some of the highlights and you can be benefited with the presence of Bouddhist and Bonpo culture that are followed by mix Tibetan tribes.

Trekking Group Size

We organize trekking in Rara Lake region for any number of people. If the group consists of more than 16 pax, we will split the group and arrange accordingly. We will assign one trek leader, one assistant leader for the group of four pax and porters (one porter between two members ) to carry members luggage. This arrangement ensures that the group can still go ahead as scheduled itinerary despite any member gets sick on the way in the trekking.

Experience and Health Requirements

Rara Lake trekking is considered a moderate trek suitable for those who can hike for 5 – 7 hours a day. Obviously hiking in the high altitude will not be so easy rather physically more demanding, however our itinerary is scheduled for the proper acclimatization while gradually gaining the altitude in the trekking. It will be advisable to have some walking and hiking or other outdoor activities for more than two weeks which will contribute to comfortable accomplishment in reaching Rara Lake. No technical skills or use of crampons are required for this trekking. It is highly recommended for the trekkers to consult with the doctors before coming for this trekking. Trekkers who have asthma, allergy or any other diseases related to hurt, lungs should take more precaution for this trekking.

Travel Insurance

Trekkers need to have traveling insurance which covers the comprehensive expenses that might incur due to medical issues or accidents (this includes air ambulance, helicopter rescue, and medical treatment costs). Insurance companies in Nepal do not provide travelling insurance for the foreigners and the trekkers need to get the travelling insurance from one of the international insurance companies. Sunrise Adventure Trek will have accident insurance for the trekking staff.

Accommodations

Accommodation in Kathmandu will be arranged on twin sharing basis on BB plan except the extra cost for the single supplement (depending on the room availability ) according to the choice of the standard of the hotels before and after the trekking. Accommodation during the trekking will be arranged at standard teahouses/ lodges with unheated rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses on twin sharing basis. The trekkers will have to share washing and toilet facilities. If the trekker is a solo traveler, he/she will have to share a room with the trekker of same sex.

Meals

Trekkers are provided three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) during Rara Lake trekking. They can enjoy wide variety of food from typical Nepali food,Tibetan food to all types of international cuisine (Continental, Italian, and Indian.). Unlike other trekking companies, Sunrise AdventureTrek allows trekkers to choose the food from the menu at the hotel / lodges in the trek. When the group is too big for the hotels/ lodges to provide individual dishes, set menu will be arranged in most places. We use the lodges / hotels which serve hygienic, nutritious and good food for the trekkers for them to get enough energy for the hiking.

Acclimatization

Any trekker can get altitude sickness while trekking in the high altitude despite strong physically fitness. What is important is giving enough time for the proper acclimatization for the trekking. Sunrise Adventure Trek has planned the itinerary with gradual altitude gain giving enough time for acclimatization for the trekkers. Hiking slowly specially in the high altitude help prevent AMS ( Acute Mountain Sickness ). If anyone feels dizzy, suffer palpitation or severe headaches and loss of appetite, he / she will be moved to the lower altitude immediately or arrange the helicopter rescue in the severe case of AMS and the client has to pay for it.

Equipment and Packing List

A variety of clothing is necessary for the Rara Lake trek. While choosing the equipment trekkers need give emphasis on two simple aspects: Lightweight and Functional. The items should be lightweight, dependable, and adaptable to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The quality of the trekking equipment you choose has a lot to do with how warm, dry, and safe you will remain. For this reason you have to be critical of quality and the proper fit of clothing.

All trekking staff of Sunrise Adventure Trek are locally employed and have the adequate knowledge about culture, ecosystem, flora, fauna, geography, history and the safety measures in running the trips. Their attitude and the efforts will be always concentrated on the less impact of the trekkers to the local culture, custom, nature and the eco system.

Porter Care

We are strongly committed to the porters rights. We make sure that they are well paid and have the proper clothing, foot ware and shelter. We are aware that no porter should be asked to carry a load that is too heavy for their physical abilities and the weight limit should be adjusted for altitude, weather and trail condition. We request our members not to have more than 15 kg weight of luggage to give to the porters. Porters who become sick while in the trekking are treated with high priority just like the other trekking staff or the members. If needed helicopter is sent and rescued in case of sever condition of sickness or accident. All porters are insured for sickness and accident.

Best Season

Nepal, as a tourist destination is good for all seasons, however, the best seasons for trekking to Rara Lake region are Spring (March – May) and Autumn (mid Sept. – mid Dec. ). Trekking in autumn season is noted for clear weather and excellent views of silvery mountains against blue sky. It gets colder towards the end of December. This trek can be done in any month except January and February.

  • 1. How difficult is Rara Lake trek and how can I Prepare?

    Trek to Rara Lake is remote and easy type trekking, can be attainable by many people nowadays. Our company provides you a porter and a guide with policy or travel insurance. People with very weak ankles, knee, hearts and lungs may have to suffer much difficulty in trekking.

  • 2. What about the safety measurements and altitude sickness do the guides and porters have their insurance in Rara Lake trek?

    Worrying for safety measurements?  Our guides having long experience are much professional for handling such issues with various means of safety measurements. For common health issues like: headache, common cold, diarrhea, vomiting, we provide you first aid medicines. In case of being sick in the mountain, Sunrise Adventure Trek will make proper arrangements rescue by helicopter, for this you should have better travel insurance. If our guide and porters may suffer from sickness, they have also travel and medical insurance and we will also rescue by helicopter.

  • 3. What about the weather conditions and Jumla flight?

    After reaching at Nepalgunj, we have to take a flight to Jumla in the morning then we start trek from Jumla but sometimes due to the air traffic and weather problems, the flight may be delayed or canceled. Due to uncertainty of Jumla weather, we are not sure about untimed flight. If there will be frequent weather problem, we do arrange a flight by helicopter chopper and for this you have to pay additionally.

  • 4. What about guide & porter, do they have well training?

    Guides and potters provided to our guests had complete accomplishment of several trainings required for their professions by the Ministry of Nepal Tourism. Having well experience in tourism sector as a guide or potter, make easy to explain all the information required for trekking and can create very familiar environment to the guests.

  • 5. What about communication system during trek?

    As all the porters and guides are well certified by the Ministry of Nepal tourism they can easily understand and speak English language during the trek. On the other hand, we can also provide you guides and potters according to your own understanding language.

  • 6. Do I need to give tips to guide and potter and if how much?

    It’s difficult to mention about tipping, but guides and potters do expect the tips at the end of the trip. However, normally people can give minimum 10% of their total payment to the guide and porter.

  • 7. What is the limitation of weight to Jumla flight and where do I store my extra bags?

    You can carry 10 kg luggage plus 5 kg hand bag and if you want to carry more than the limit you have to pay extra charges. You can keep your extra bags in your hotel or in the office in Kathmandu.

  • 8. What kind of food, drinking water and accommodation do we have on Rara Lake trek?

    Trek to Rara Lake with Sunrise Adventure Trek includes trekking lodges or guest houses as accommodation with twin bed sharing room, if you are in a group and if you are solo traveler, you have private room.  Regarding meals, we will have some options to choose like: continental foods, Italian, Indian and Chinese cuisine etc. For drinking water, you can buy the mineral bottles or safe drinking water from hotel either you can bring water tablets.

  • 9. How many hours should I walk per day and what happened if I am a slow walker in the group?

    Normally, we have to walk around 5 to 7 hours per day, if you are slow in walk the team leader will professionally manage to you walking with our assistance guide and potter.
