WHERE IS MOUNT EVEREST LOCATED?

Where is Mount Everest Located?

Nepal containing four of the six highest mountains in the world is also the home place of Mt. Everest. It is also known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in the Tibetan language. Located at an elevation of 8848m (29029ft.) in Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas lies between the border of Nepal and Tibetan Plateau. Thus, the routes may create confusion for the climbers. One is the standard route where the summit is approached from the southeast in Nepal and for the second, the summit is approached from the northeast. Along with this, there are many other routes to Mt. Everest, but the most used and technically easier route is through the southeast face of Himalaya.

  • Southeast route:

This route starts from the south side of Mt.Everest at an elevation of 5,380m (17,700ft.). Starting the trip from Kathmandu including Namche Bazaar on the trail and then to the high camp, which takes nearly 6 to 8 days refers southeast route.

  • Northeast route:

Similarly, the northeast route starts from the north side of Mt. Everest which belongs to Tibetan Plateau at an elevation of 5180m (16990ft.). The common spot that both routes contain is the summit itself.

Interesting Insight-

There was a dispute regarding Mt. Everest’s height between China and Nepal which lasted from 2005 to 2010. Nepal claimed its height as 8848 meters and China claimed only 8844 meters. Why the difference? Because China measured only up to the rock of Everest and Nepal included the pile of snow too. But later in 2010, the final agreement was made between two countries and set it to 8848 meters as its official height. And Nepal still recognizes its rock height as 8844 meters.

 Expeditions over Mountain:

The first early attempt in the history of Mt. Everest climbing was made in 1924 June 8 by George Mallory and Andrew Irvine through the North face but unfortunately, they never returned back. Then in 1953, the second successful attempt was made by a Nepali Sherpa climber, Tenzing Norgay, and the New Zealander Edmund Hillary. Many climbers, foreigners climb the Everest every year.
